"...I was one who seeks, and I still am, but I no longer seek in the stars or in books; I'm beginning to hear the teachings of my blood pulsing within me." ~ Hermann Hesse

Happy June folks,

The quote from Herman Hesse above is something I came across recently and it seemed to reflect my new thinking about my place and life and how and where my inspiration comes from. Perhaps it might make sense to you, too?

Here we are at the start of summer and there's lots going on.  We spent a May running from place to place and enjoyed shows up and down the California coast.  In mid-May Steve and I were honored to perform on a bill in Berea, Kentucky with Kathy Mattea and John McCutchen honoring music legend and our friend Jean Ritchie as we celebrated a pre-release of the new Ritchie tribute album "Dear Jean - Artists Celebrate Jean Ritchie."  Stay tuned for news of this release later this summer. The artists involved are amazing, from Judy Collins and Janis Ian, to Peggy and Pete Seeger ~ perhaps Pete's last recorded project before his death last winter.  Joan Baez and Dolly Parton write liner notes, and the music is extraordinary.  It'll be released in August by Compass Records and I couldn't be more excited to be a part of what I know will be considered a landmark legacy recording.

And now that a new month is here the HL band and I are planning a few more shows here in Los Angeles and then beginning a new recording project, headed by our producer Herb Pedersen.  We're excited to be working with Herb who has an eye-popping resume in his long music career, working with everyone you can name.

Herb began his career in Berkeley, California in the early 60s playing 5 string banjo and acoustic guitar with people like David Grisman, Butch Waller, David Nelson, and Jerry Garcia. Herb has done well in adding his talents to the recordings of many folk and country music artists of today.  For the last thirty years, Herb has lived in southern California, and participated in select music groups, either in recording, or traveling on the road doing concerts. His recording discography is like a who's who of the singer/songwriter scene, so prevalent in the 70s and 80s. His own groups, like The Desert Rose Band, and The Laurel Canyon Ramblers, show why Herb is so respected in the industry.  Artists like Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill, Johnny Rivers, Dan Fogelberg, James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, Jennifer Warnes, John Prine and Jesse Winchester have used Herb's talents in the past.  So we're super happy to welcome Herb into the Hilonesome fold and look forward to the best album we've ever created.  So please stay tuned for news of the new album coming soon!  For more on Herb you can find his website here:  www.herbpedersen.com

We're happy to doing two co-bills in LA this month with our pals Claudia Russell and Bruce Kaplan and their Folk Unlimited Orchestra.  Claudia's songs and albums have graced our ears for many years and her latest CD "All Our Luck Is Changing" is truly remarkable.  Check out their sound at their website:  www.claudiarussell.com and plan to join us for at least one of our shows with them on either June 20 or 21.  Details are on our Calendar page.

I've also been asked to be on the bill for another Pete Seeger tribute concert, this time at the historic and beautiful Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum on July 31.  Details to the left and I hope you'll join us for some stellar music and of course singalongs!

Please sign our mailing list if you are not already on it (if someone has forwarded this to you) and keep in touch with us. There's a signup box below this letter. Lots more good stuff on the horizon!

Enjoy the beautiful June and happy trails,

Love,
Susie
