Shows with Houston Jones and Good Old Fashioned, Firefly Bistro and the Woodshed Sessions Return September 5!

Hey, Friends...!
We're at the Dog Days and looking forward to reunions with good friends and old-time acquaintances this month.

We're scratchin' gravel to get going on our early August mini-tour.  We're on the road on August 8 to Northern California for a shared show with our great friends Houston Jones at a new venue for us, St. Cyprian's in San Francisco.  The SF Live Arts Music Series is a well-known and respected venue for live music and we're thrilled to be part of an upcoming stellar night with HJ, the Bay area's best kept secret.  Then the next day we'll be catching up with old friends and teaching guitar, mandolin, fiddle, bass and singing workshops and performing a main stage set at the Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival with the Northern California Bluegrass Society.  Later in August we're back in LA to join our friend Brad Colerick at the Firefly Bistro writer's night.  It's a lovely restaurant and the food is tremendous, so if you're in the South Pasadena area come and check it out.  The lovely and talented Tom Corbett will be joining us for some wonderful tunes of his own.

Reminder that copies of "Dear Jean ~ Artists Celebrate Jean Ritchie" will be with me on the road this summer.  These are pre-release copies available only through the artists before the official September 3 release date from Compass Records.  This double-disk CD project boasts performances from Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Janis Ian, Kathy Mattea, Tim O'Brien, Suzy Boguss and Alison Brown among many others.  I know it will be a collector's item!  Come see us at a show this summer or send me an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and let me know you want to order your own pre-release copy.  My article on our Berea, Kentucky CD release concert last May with Kathy Mattea and John McCutcheon is the subject of my current Folkworks column. Check it out at www.folkworks.org.

Recommendations for good reading and listening:  I've been listening to some great new records lately, including Jeni & Billy's new one "Picnic in the Sky" and Willie Nelson's "Band of Brothers."  It's a comfort and delight to know that traditional Country is so well looked after by these three stellar artists.  You can check out Jeni & Billy at their website: www.jeniandbilly.com and Willie's new one on iTunes.

I've been completely blown away by the astonishing poetry of Appalachia coal country from author Diane Gilliam Fisher in her book "Kettle Bottom."  This writer's command of this subject and understanding of the culture and language can be likened to that of William Faulkner and Flannery O'Connor.  Please check out this very fine piece of writing.

For those of you in Southern California who enjoyed our Woodshed Sessions  series at the Coffee Gallery last winter/spring you will be pleased to know that it is back by popular demand, beginning a once a month residency on September 5.  With more new songs from us and new LA songwriters to share with you, Merlin Snider is first up, with Brad Colerick, Don Raymond and Brian Joseph taking us through December.

Thanks for reading, pals ~ keep in touch, stay cool out there and we'll see you at the show!  Check our Calendar Page for more shows coming for the rest of the year.
